Harpies - Deep/Just Like You
Here Be Monsters
For 'sound' alone Harpies are gonna be compared to Kittie due to the
girlie vocal over the deep metalic crunch. But this Mid-lands based
combo have way more in the way of structures (there's a gothic feel
goin on somehow) and I'm sure whilst Kittie's not cat litter, Harpies
chew on steriods.

"They're kind of like a more intense, far scarier
Stoopi - this is gloriously raw. Slipnot would shit themselves, Kittie
would run back to the kids from the fame school they came from. This
is totally, utterly, raw, totally confrontational".
Rocksound
"'We call our sound 'plinky and raw', says Nicky. By
which she means that they make Slipknot sound like new born baby kittens
gently pissing on perfumed cotton wool".

Kerrang
It might well be time to administer the last rites to un-metal,
but on the other hand 'Deep', the debut single by Midlands quartet
Harpies, could be its salvation. Not just cos Harpies reach new cranium-busting
heights with their aggresso-guitars, but cos the holler-and-hush vocal
style of singers Nicky Honey and Laura Westwood (the latter swaying
and sighing like some evil siren) bathes this single in more subtle
metallic hues.

Rock Sound
You need Harpies - intense, scathing raw, raw, raw, grrrl-powered,
screaming, blistering, festering, nu-metal-powered spitting, growling,
punk rock rawness. There's five of them, three girls - including the
screaming vocalist creature - and two boys. This is excellent, in
a really violent car crash kind of way. You know how it is - you don't
want to look, but you know you have to. In with all that violence
they have some colour, some imagination, they're kind of like a more
intense, far scarier Stoopi - this is gloriously raw. Slipnot would
shit themselves, Kittie would run back to the kids from the fame school
they came from. This is totally, utterly, raw, totally confrontational;
this is not polite, this is not nice - you need it.

Scootering
Harpies-Deep-Fortune and Glory. Occupying
the territory formally held by Twist, Midlands based Harpies, two
girls two guys are loud brash and brutal yet possess an infectiously
endearing slant to their powered up raw and rawkus rock outs. A cool
debut release.

Bugger me, it sounds like someone's found the
stable door that keeps the Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse under lock
and key and kicked it in. Already a favourite of Steve Lamacq and
Mary-Anne Hobbs, Harpies riff on the balladic quite/lung bursting
vitriol/balladic quiet template minted by sugarComa with assurance,
with the added bonus that Nicky Honey and Laura Westwood can actually
carry a tune without the aid of bucket. It's savage stuff ;thrillingly
visceral, yet melodic and as heavy as concrete overshoes. Not one
for the indie kids then, but ideal for greasy-haired losers everywhere.

Harpies - Deep/Just Like You
S-Press
'Deep' is classy vocals over a blend of nu-rock and metal,
tempered with screams, big riffs and build-up. 'Just Like You', is
melodic and slightly gentler, in a loud kind of way. It's all been
done before but it'll still get the kids on the dancefloor.
INTERVIEW
Metal Hammer Magazine
Who are they?
One of the singers, Nicky Honey, has a day job trowelling
slap into the crevices of old and hideously ugly T.V personalities.
She and fellow vocalist, Laura 'Flora' Westwood, kidnapped guitarist
John Devlin and bass player Paul Hunt from another Band. And 'brutal'
drummer Luke Johnson competed the line-up (when the original drummer
Lindsey, ran away to Manchester - the fool).
What do they sound like?
'We call our sound 'plinky and raw', says Nicky.
By which she means that they make Slipknot sound like new-born baby
kittens gently pissing on perfumed cotton wool. On the 'raw' bits
anyway. Way more subtle, layered and interesting than your average
bunch of nu-metal monkeys , Harpies are developing a neat line in
aggresso attack-rock with disturbing holler'n'hush vocals. Think Amen,
Sick Of It All, Raging Speedhorn and This Mortal Coil. But don't mention
Sugar Coma. They've been compared to 'Bis crossed with Pantera', The
mind boggles eh, eh?
This one time ….
'Near death experiences?
All the time! Paul drives and he is the worst road
rager you've ever met. Every single time we get in the van and anybody
else even goes near it he goes mental. He has this habit of slamming
on the brake so the gear topples over onto all of us in the back.
That's how Laura got smashed in the head by a guitar and concussed
just before and important gig.
They say ……
'I remember reading this book about mythology when
I was small and it mentioned these 'Harpies' who were like spirits
of the deep. They were unstoppable, nothing could prevail against
them and nothing could get in their way. We make the kind of music
the original harpies might have made. We lure people into a false
sense of security - and then we destroy them. We
say ……
Like their fanged and leather-winged
mythical namesakes (see Jason and the Argonauts), Harpies are irresistible
and not a little scary. They've still yet to make the killer recording
that fully captures the devastating intensity of their live gigs.
But when they do, mythological status will surely follow.
