Harpies – Lie Down
Logo Magazine
I’ve often lain awake at night
wondering what Republica would sound like if they had been corrupted
by Queens of The Stone Age. The prospect of the look on Saffron’s
face as Nick Oliveri waved his chopper around would have me giggling
for hours. Actually, I made that all up, but you have to start a review
somewhere, and how else can I get that juxtaposition of opposites
to work? That’s exactly what Harpies do, taking polar opposites
and running them full pelt at each other just to watch the carnage.
They do the same thing with Kim Wilde and Sikth by the way, and that’s
just as much fun. The dirty/sweet routine has been done before, notably
by Sugarcoma (officially the holders of the title ‘the Worst
Band I Have Ever Seen’) but now I’ve heard her, I confidently
proclaim Nicky Honey as possessing officially the dirtiest and sweetest
voice on the planet.

Organ Magazine SINGLE OF THE WEEK
Ahh please don’t let us down
Harpies …. Whooosh, no arrghhhhh – another pummeling reign
of musical body blows and silky seduction sonic mindgame playing mutilations.
No compromise here, Harpies are still dealing the deal, all is indeed
well with the world. Scathing brutal beauty, skin peeling positive
violent messed up nu-metal that isn’t waiting around for the
rulebook to thell them what they should do next. Second rather overdue
single from a band who (as we keep on telling you) have been consistently
dropping tasty demos and things for more than a couple of years now.
Hey look, you can be emotional and reflective with out doing the emo-metal
by numbers thing- second track here Station does everything you want
it to and it does it with clever emotional light and shade and pain
and juvenile violence and yes indeed, Birmingham’s Harpies never
ever let us down – out on Feb 16th, go get it.

Scootering Magazine
With a seemingly ever-changing line
up of musicians coming and going, The Harpies have stablised to record
this wicked new single. Full on, no holds barred kick ass punk tinged
rock, a behemoth of a song.

Metal News
We don't get many female artists here
to review, so I was pleased and quite interested in finding out that
harpies is not fronted by one woman, but by two.
This is the second single by Birmingham's (UK) Harpies,
and I really don't know how to describe it. Some intricate guitar
work and some fantastic vocals harmonies pave way for some aggressive,
dual screaming similar in style to Raging Speedhorn if they had two
women vocalists instead.
There's only a couple of tracks on here so it shouldn't
cost that much to pick this up as it provides a great intro to the
band. There's not much more I can say really other than if the rest
of their forthcoming album is going to be anything like this then
Harpies will definitely attract some interest.

Harpies - Lie Down
Sounds XP
In early Greek myths, Harpies were beautiful, winged maidens. Only
later did they become monsters with the faces of ugly crones, inflicting
punishment and torment. Bit like Madonna then. Nicola Honey and Laura
Westwood, twin vocalists of Brummy hardcore exponents Harpies, somehow
combine both as they alternate between mesmerising ethereal melodies
and ferocious demonic screaming that would scare the shit out of Raging
Speedhorn. Similarly the music veers from deceptively mellow and dreamy
to brutal pummelling riffing that will have heads exploding Scanners-style
across the land. Given half a chance they’d eat Slipknot for
breakfast and crap their fetid remains into the netherworld. And that
can only be a good thing.

Kerrang
IN GREEK mythology, Harpies were winged maidens who later became winged
monsters. And while we're not suggesting that the two front-women
in this oppressivley heavy five-piece are unsightly, their harsh screaming
sounds seem to come from a very dark and depressing place indeed.
If you're looking for the kind of mutated metal sounds created by
SikTh and Slipnot but with a feminine touch, look no further.

Metal Hammer
Birmingham based and extreme to fuck, Harpies are here to destroy
your ears. Laura Westwood and Nicola Honey sing sweetly to lull you
into a false sense of security before launching the kind of scream
aural assault that makes Mudvayne sound slightly limp wristed. We
can only presume Nicola's surname is ironic. This is black music from
the Black country. 8/10

Black Velvet
With a new drummer joining the band and a debut full-length release
in the pipeline, 2004 looks to be a good year for Harpies. The music
has some eerie, heavy metal, calm verses leading up to loud and in-your-face
choruses that work work well together and accompanies by the cocal
assault of Laura Westwood and Nicola Honey creat some serious shit-your-pants
rock. Three Hearts
